Having an extra refrigerator in your garage can provide several convenient advantages. It may offer more space for storing foods and beverages while making it easy to grab bottled drinks or snacks while doing yard work or participating in outdoor recreation activities. However, since garage areas in Arizona can become warm, it's important to take precautions to protect the appliance. Here's how walk-in repair technicians suggest keeping your fridge in good condition.

A Guide for Using a Refrigerator in a Garage

1. Keep It Cool

The greater the difference between your fridge's interior temperature and the air surrounding it, the harder the appliance will work to produce cool air. When it works harder, it uses excess energy, putting stress on mechanical components and leading to breakdowns and elevated utility bills. You can prevent your garage temperature from rising and protect your fridge by adding insulation to the walls and overhead doors, using fans in the space, or installing vents. These solutions will minimize heat transfer and let warm air disperse.

2. Store Non-Perishables

Since garage fridges are more vulnerable to operational failure, any perishable foods and beverages in them can spoil if they break down. As a precaution, you can use your extra fridge for storing non-perishables you want to keep cool, such as sports drinks and bottled water. If the appliance breaks down, you likely won't need to throw out these items.

3. Ensure Proper Electrical Connections

Residential kitchens typically have the proper outlets and hookups to support a refrigerator's electrical needs. However, your garage might not have the appropriate connectivity, meaning the appliance won't receive enough power to maintain cool interior temperatures. Before adding a fridge to the space, ensure there is a 115-volt, AC-only outlet. A refrigeration and walk-in repair technician can double-check the electrical connectivity during installation to ensure the appliance will have enough power to function correctly.

4. Stock It

Keeping a fridge as full as possible minimizes the amount of warm air that can enter when you open the door. This lets the interior easily return to the appropriate temperature once you close the door, preventing the appliance from using too much energy or overworking to keep the contents cool. Stock as many items as possible in your garage fridge. However, keep the areas near vents clear so that you don't obstruct cool airflow to the interior.
